The Martyrdom of Imam Muhammed Baqir (A.S) PDF Print E-mail

We offer our condolence on the martyrdom of Imam Muhammed Baqir (A.S) to all the Shiahs of the world.

Hazrat Muhammed Baqir (A.S) is the fifth Imam amongst the twelve pure and holy Imams of the Shiahs.

In Medina, Imam Baqir (A.S) strived hard confronting the practical and intellectual deviations of the Umayyad and endeavoured in renewing the pure teachings of Islam. He undertook excessive pains for upbringing scholars and jurisprudents. Some of his students who have carved a niche in the world are Jaber-ibn-Yazid Jo’fi, Zarareh-ibn-Ayon, Abu Basir Mawadi and Muhammed-ibn- Muslim. They are only a few of the great scholars who with their knowledge and wisdom became the true defenders of the Ahlul Bait school of thought during that time.

Finally, the innocent Imam (A.S) as per the conspiracy hatched by Hisham Ibn Abdul Malik, the evil Umayyad Caliph attained martyrdom on the 7th Zilhaly 114 A.H. at the age of 57 years. His pure body was buried in the Baqi cemetery next to the grave of his holy father Imam Sajjad (A.S).

Some events concerning his holy life:

  1. One day, a Christian man approached Imam Muhammed Baqir (A.S) and mockingly said: ‘You are Baqara’ (meaning cow). The holy Imam (A.S) was undisturbed and said in a gently tone: ‘I am not Baqara. I am Baqir’. The Christian man repeatedly ventured and took the liberty of ridiculing the holy Imam (A.S). But, the pure Imam (A.S) replied him very calmnly. The Christian man, witnessing such forbearance and good nature of the holy Imam (A.S) finally turned into a Muslim.

  2. The weather was very hot and the sun was hotly shining on the gardens and the agricultural lands of Medina. A person named Muhammed Bin Maukur who reckoned himself to be pious and a true worshipper, suddenly saw Imam Muhammed Baqir (A.S) busy toiling in the agricultural field under such hot circumstances. He said to himself: ‘Why is this honorable man toiling so hard in this intense heat for the sake of worldly gains! It is better that I give him some advice and exhortation.’

He went forward and greeted him and said: ‘Is it deserving and befitting for a honorable man like you to toil in this unbearable heat for the sake of this world. If in such a state, you die, then how would you meet your Lord? How would you reply Him?

Imam Muhammed Baqir (A.S) said while perspiring profusely, ‘If I die in such a state, it would be as if I have died while worshipping my Lord and having fulfilled my duty towards Him. This is because this work is itself obedience and worship and you are wrong to imagine that worship is limited to Namaz and supplications only. If I do not work and toil for my subsistence, I will have to stretch my hand towards people like you and this itself is humiliation and degradation.”

On hearing these words, Muhammed Bin Maakur said, “ I was in great error. I considered advising and counseling him but have now realized that what a great mistake I had indeed committed.”

A few saying of Imam Muhammed Baqir (A.S):

  1. “The foundation and basis of Islam has been laid on five principles, namely Namaz, Zakat, Hajj, Saum (fasting) and Vilayat. Then, Zurarah, one of Imam’s trusted companions asked, ‘Which of these five principles is the most superior?’ Imam (A.S.) replied, ‘Imamate and Vilayat is the most superior because it is the key to all of them. The master of Vilayat and Imam is the proof, Mizan (weighing-scale) and standard for all of them,”

  2. Lie and falsehood annihilates and destroys Imaan (faith).

  3. The Almighty Allah is disgusted and weary of those who insult and disgrace others.

  4. The Holy Prophet of Islam (S.A) said, “ Anyone desiring of meeting the Almighty Allah in pleasing mood should make friendship with Muhammed Baqir (A.S).”

We offer our condolence on this day of grief.

We offer our condolence to our holy Imam Zaman (A.S) for the martyrdom of his great grandfather Imam Muhammed Baqir (A.S).
